Game Objectives
Challenge systems thinking with this FT award-winning role-playing game backed by academic research. Explore alternative pathways to a sustainable future and learn to navigate economic, technological, and societal shifts while playing in various stakeholder roles.

My Role
It was my role to digitise a board game originally created for COP26. Initially, I created the project in Adobe Articulate to automate the scoring and alleviate staff time and human error. However, Articulate couldn’t achieve the level of interoperability I wanted.
My ultimate goal however was to create a server-run, web-based resource using multi-screen display (inspired by Jackbox games), mobile voting and rich media. This involved my managing the inter-departmental project while designing an all new User Experience, User Interface design, branding, marketing and digital assets. I also introduced a mock-AI companion to further alleviate the pressure on people running the game so they could focus on sharing their expertise in sustainability, not worrying about game mechanics.
Researcher and problem-solver were also key parts of my role as any issues we encountered were new to us and required steep learning curves for myself and the developer. The largest issue encountered occurred when multiple users were logging in at the same time which created unwanted duplications of role allocations. If you were lucky enough to not get a duplicated role, you may have been prevented from logging in at all, or you may have gotten past this issue and made it into the game, only to find that they myriad of ghost players now present rendered the game unusable.
We solved this issue by introducing a lobby feature, created using mutually-exclusive based code to allow simultaneous user connection without duplication. An incredibly powerful lesson to learn that we can now carry through to future projects and never again have to face the issue of role duplication and ghost players.

Game Outcome
The ultimate goal of this game is to increase agency within sustainability, spark innovation, and upskill your team in sustainability competencies.
We recorded a 20% increase in belief in personal impact on sustainability.
